Meet Natalie

Hi, I'm Natalie! It's So Nice to Meet You!

I am a recent graduate from Boston Conservatory at Berklee's MFA Musical Theater Vocal Pedagogy program. Prior to that, I earned my BFA in Musical Theater from SUNY Fredonia. At both institutions, I was able to teach voice lessons and group voice to Acting majors and Dance majors of all levels of experience. During my time in Boston, I was also a Teaching Fellow at Boston City Singers and worked privately with students ages 13-17 and assistant-directed two choirs standing Grades 3-12.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Singing is an extremely vulnerable experience. It is the only musical instrument that the performer cannot set down, put in a case, and walk away from. Singers carry their instruments, the voice,  everywhere we go. It is part of our identity as a human being. These are things that I constantly remind myself and my students of when I teach voice.

My ultimate goal in the voice studio is to create a safe space for singers to make noises, cultivate skills, and ultimately, fall in love with their voices. I do this by meeting each individual student where they are in their voice journey and help them grow according to their goals and ambitions. I understand that not every student learns in the same way or needs the same things from a teacher, so I diversify my teaching approaches to best fit each student. At the core of my work, I aim to build a relationship with my students based on trust and respect. With this relationship, I can better serve them, and we can make some beautiful music together.

Musical Theater has always been at the forefront of my performing and teaching life. I specialize in cultivating and exploring all of the different qualities a singer needs to make to sing in the musical theater style: whether that be singing a song from a Rogers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma, or taking on the role of Elphaba in Wicked.

However, I also think it is important to cross-train singers: this goes for classical singers exploring musical theater repertoire, musical theater singers singing classical repertoire, and exploring CCM such as pop, rock, country, jazz, and many others. I believe that all different types of music styles can aid each other in developing a solid foundation for vocal technique. Skills that a classical singer might need could be cultivated in a musical theater song and vice versa for a contemporary singer.

As a voice teacher, I understand that my role is to be a guide for my students as they climb up the metaphorical mountain of singing. Therefore, it is always my goal to provide my students with the tools and support they need on their personal journey of singing.
